Matthew 24: 42-51

Hey!  Wake up!  God has something for you to do today!  Hop to it!  One of the overriding themes of the gospel of Matthew is how the Israelites turned their backs on God many, many times.  Reading the books of the Old Testament we see time and time again where God had given them direction or guidelines for living a life that would lead to eternal happiness.  The Israelites would listen for a time, but then fall away again.

Chapters 24 and 25 of Matthew speak to the Hebrews to tell them again, be ready!  Reconcile with God.  Live your life the way God has instructed.  Great stuff is coming so be ready.  We use Luke’s version of this same reading many times at wake services, though in Luke’s version Luke tells us that those who serve in this life will be served in the next.  It is always a time for those attending the wake service to reflect on how the person who passed from this life had done making sure they were ready, but also, and importantly, for them to consider how prepared they are for that same passing.

Being ready and serving others requires two big things, the starting point is always, but always, prayer – because our actions become the realization of our prayers.  The second is we have to let go of something in order to take on something new.  By that I mean, we must make the decision to place God first, others second, and ourselves third.  And that is a decision to be made, it is not forced upon us.   May mean sacrificing our playtime, or delaying that project you have been planning around the house.  Trust God, it will pay huge dividends.

The poet Maya Angelou noted that people will not remember what you said, probably will not remember things you did, but they will always remember how you made them feel.  So wake up!  Can you ask God today to place on your heart what he wants you to do?  Sure you can!  So have at it!!

Then go smile at God today – He gave you a beautiful day!
