Matthew 23: 13-22

For centuries, our Church has recognized the Queenship of our Holy Mother Mary.  A few examples: early Church Fathers referred to her as “the Mother of the King”, St. Jerome referred to her as “Lady”, in Hebrew her name means “Domina” – the mistress of the house…and that house being our Church.  St. Martin in the 7th century referred to her as “our Glorious Lady, ever Virgin”.  In 1950, the Church defined the dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which eventually led to today’s Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Recognizing the Truth of God entails relationship with God to help us understand how our lives should be in continual pursuit of that Truth.  That is where we look to our Holy Mother as an example of understanding how that relationship will open our eyes to the Truth.  Living the Truth brings with it what God really wants for us…eternal happiness.  Mary’s life was certainly not easy, just look to the 7 Sorrows of Mary, but the way she intertwined her will with the Father’s will enabled her to move through those struggles.

I think that is much of the frustration Jesus shows in today’s gospel.  His frustration with the scribes and Pharisees rests with their inability to strive for their lives to be intertwined with the Father’s.  Rather, they were putting their definition of the truth in place of God’s Truth, resulting in imperfect rituals and interpretations of the Mosaic Law that were leading people away from God.

We can all fall into that trap too.  The Rites and Sacraments of our faith are intended to help advance our relationship with God.  Each of those Rites and Sacraments are intertwined, they never stand on their own, but all have the experience of Jesus in the Eucharist at the base of them all.  So here you go…two things to get done this week: 1) get to our Parish library located in the church narthex, grab a book about our faith and learn; 2) get to Reconciliation!  What is holding you back?  Is it a real reason, or maybe…..just an excuse?

Go smile at God today!
