Sunday Prayer Service
The Ascension of the Lord
May 29, 2022

Opening Prayer
O God,
whose Son today
ascended to the heavens
as the Apostles looked on,
grant, we pray,
that, in accordance with his promise,
we may be worthy for him to live with us always on earth,
and
we with him in heaven.
Who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever
Amen.

Quotes
“Christ is already in that place of peace, which is all in all. He is on the right hand of God . . . . That is our home; here we are on a pilgrimage.”
—Cardinal John Henry Newman
“In the Christian story God descends to re-ascend.”
—C. S .Lewis

Homily
Closing Prayer
May the strength of God sustain us;
May the power of God preserve us;
May the hands of God protect us;
May the way of God direct us;
May the love of God go with us
this day and forever.
Amen.
What's in Your Heart?
Whichever of the second readings you hear today, what they say are remarkably similar. Both talk about a great gift but also a great responsibility. The “holy ones” who believe in the risen Christ achieve a special status. Christ’s Resurrection and Ascension have opened the door to the heavenly sanctuary where the assemblies of earth and heaven become one. All share in God’s victory over sin. All are cleansed.
-
How are you an active part of Christ’s mission?
-
How do you seek—and give—forgiveness?

The Lord's Prayer
Our Father who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
Amen
Petitions
As members of the church of Christ who ascended to heaven, we know we can like him enter the divine sanctuary and make our prayers for God’s intercession.
-
That the church may hold to its confession of faith, we pray, Lord, hear our prayer.
-
That the hearts of all people may be enlightened by God’s peace, we pray, Lord, hear our prayer.
-
That those who live in confusion and fear find the spirit of God’s wisdom, we pray, Lord, hear our prayer.
-
That the community of faith shows it love of God in both worship and in mission to the world as Christ’s witnesses, we pray, Lord, hear our prayer.
With confidence in God’s power to save, we make our prayers in the name of Christ who was raised from the dead and ascended to the Father, where he lives and reigns with the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
